Climate Change at the Arctic’s Edge: Day 2

Today we officially began research! I can’t believe it’s only day 2 and the first day of research because so much has happened in this one day.

We began the day getting fitted for our trusty waders. As this is a wetland study, cold and full of bugs we need the waders to protect us. These neoprene beauties also paired well with our rubber boots and bug nets. It’s a stylish look, for sure.

After we found the correct waders, shoes and bug nets we returned to our classroom to learn all about maps. I’ll be honest I’ve never had a love for maps but our tech and trainee Danielle was so excited it made me feel the same. She explained the difference between GPS, GIS and cartography. They really do some interesting things with maps that I didn’t realize. The layers of GIS can give so much information about certain areas and the inhabitants there along with the landscape. We also talked about Google Earth, which many people love but don’t always think about the technology involved in those maps.

We learned about the satellite landsat7 that takes the images for Google Earth. Since we were talking about images and mapping we also looked at many other satellites at the website stuffin.space It’s amazing! The website basically showed all the junk we’ve put into orbit and there is a lot! I will definitely be using this in my classroom, the kids will love it.

After our lesson on maps we went out into the field and began learning to use GPS. I’m fairly certain if my dad were here he’d be making fun of me for my lack of use and understanding of the GPS Sorry, Dad! I figured it out!

After some quick practice with the GPS we had the absolutely amazing experience of watching the team here release some snowy owls! Apparently, the owls were supposed to be released yesterday but our flight delay also delayed their release. These owls were born in an owl sanctuary knowing that the ultimate goal was to release them when old enough. Their parents unfortunately cannot fly so they can’t release but these owls are bred and then their offspring are released into snowy Owl environments. Which, is just amazing! There was 1 female and three males (if I remember correctly).

Our PI, LeAnn and tech Morgan told us their history and then released them. The owls were a tad hesitant to leave their current homes but once they were out they were fast in their flight. I am so grateful to have been here on a day this occurred and be able to watch their release. It was beautiful.

After the release and lunch we had a short safety briefing. We talked about the importance of safety in the cold wetland conditions and the risk of polar bear encounters. To sum it all up we need to listen to our PI and bear watchers. Their whole job is to ensure our safety and that’s definitely appreciated. We are in bear country and need to respect that.

After the safety briefing we had our first experience in the field! As I said yesterday, we are helping one of the researchers, Tom, with the study of his Wood Frogs (not woodland). What we are doing is helping him flag known locations of the frogs as well as random locations. His thesis and study is to see what will happen to the frogs as earth continues o warm and the permafrost layer melts. This layer is so important in the wetland environment here because it keeps the wetlands from drying out. When this permafrost melts the water dries up, as do the wood frogs homes. He wants to study their area of living to see what will occur and he’s using plaster molds of frogs to also see the amount of water loss that occurs.

It is such interesting research and really shows the correlation of our changing climate and the effect it will have on the animals living here. We know this melting of permafrost will occur. Only time can tell what will happen to our wood frogs when this does happen.

Climate Change at the Arctic’s Edge: Day 1

We arrived in Churchill, Canada today. After 2 delays we made it to our destination around 3pm. I didn’t know I had a fear of airplanes until we got on a small jet that used a propellar for flying. Unfortunately, for me I was also sitting and staring at this propellar the entire flight just imagining all the ways it could possibly bring about my demise. Needless to say, I’ll try to avoid sitting next to the propellar on my return flight.

Due to our late arrival we didn’t do much in term of research, study and exploration today. However, our Principal Investogator (PI), LeAnn, did give us a brief summary of our location and upcoming research projects.

Our location here in Churchill is part of the sub arctic. She showed us an image similar to the one below and explained that Churchill is in the “armpit” of the sub arctic. She reminded us that even though we may not see the snow and ice currently we are still in a winter environment and it’s the northwestern winds that bring the cold to this area.

We also learned about something called isostatic rebounding. Which, is when there used to be a glacial sheet that used to be pushing down on the Earth, the sheet has melted and the Earth is rebounding from these effects.

Our job during this journey will be to study wetlands, their biodiversity and the differences in each. Due to this isostatic rebounding there are new portions of earth’s crust making their appearance at our top level. This means that the wetlands near the Hudson Bay. On which our facility sits are much younger than those further inland. We are going to compare the biodiversity in each region. We are also going to help a grad student with his studies in hepatology, or frogs, there are 2 different types of frogs we will be looking at Woodland frogs and the other I can’t remember and will update tomorrow.

The facilities here are gorgeous. Everything is lush and green. A huge change from the Arizona summer. I love waking up and looking out my window with the view of the water. There are safety precautions because this is polar bear territory. We cannot wander outside alone and must also be very careful in our water use. More on that later when I explain the facility. I am so excited to be here and get out into the wetlands and see what we can discover!

New Year, New Resolutions?

I love setting resolutions but it can be overwhelming. My rebellious nature tends to fight against what I have to do so heres 10 Things I am NOT doing in 2019:
1. I’m not caring what others think of me. That’s their business and I am who I am. Take it or leave it.
2. I’m not dieting! Everything in moderation has been my life motto. It’s worked this far.
3. I’m not waiting. There are no right or perfect times. There’s only now and I’m not waiting.
4. I’m not giving up on myself. I have plans.
5. I’m not settling. Life is too short to live unhappy.
6. I’m not spending more than I make. Budgets create more opportunities to travel!
7. I’m not taking everything so seriously. I love laughing! I love making silly jokes and I love sharing them with others. Can’t stop. Won’t stop.
8. I’m not reaching for perfection. It doesn’t exist.
9. I’m not judging myself and others. We all just need LOVE.
10. I’m not going to spend all my time on my phone. Intentional fun family time is a big focus this year!

5 Reasons to Consider Non-Toxic Skin Care and Household Products

You may or may not have heard the terms non-toxic, natural, organic or simple recently regarding your skin care and household products. However, what does that really mean?  “Non-toxic is a term established by the Federal Hazardous Substances Act.  This act, which is enforced by the Consumer Product and Safety commission, defines what are toxic substances and toxic situations.   A product is considered to be toxic if it can cause personal injury or illness to humans when if it is inhaled, swallowed, or absorbed through the skin. Products are also considered toxic if they can cause long term or chronic problems such as cancer or birth defects.  If a product does not contain a known toxic chemical, it can be labeled as non-toxic” With that being said, not all non-toxic products are created equally and should still be used with caution. However, when it comes down to it I would rather slather myself and my children in lotion that is safer for my family. Without further ado, five reasons to consider non-toxic products for your family.

  1. Reduced Carcinogens.

Carcinogens are “any substance, radionuclide, or radiation that is an agent directly involved in causing cancer. This may be due to the ability to damage the genome or to the disruption of cellular metabolic processes.” Many toxic chemicals are known to contain carcinogens, you can view the full list on the American Cancer Society.

2. Gentler on Skin.

Non-toxic skin care products are known for the gentle effect on our skin. This can be especially important for children and infants. The gentle skin helps keep the skin moist without the toxins being soaked in. I am not sure about you, but I use soap and lotion every day. I mean, I think it is fairly common.

3. Your Clothes Will Last Longer.

Household products with less toxins are also gentler on your clothes. Why? Well, without the toxic bleach and other harsh chemicals your clothes are not treated to an acrid wash each and every time you clean them. Helping maintain their fresh look and lasting even longer than normal.

4. Less Inhaled Toxins

When we think about our household products we also tend to neglect the fact that we inhale the toxins in our home. In a recent study of home cleaning products, it was shown that cleaning products and accidents mixing cleaning chemicals has produced over 200 known cases of illness that have sent individuals to the hospital. One case even ended in death. Why does this happen? Well, I cannot say for sure in each case, but there are many tutorials on the internet telling individuals how to create their own cleaning products, but neglects safety information. Did you know mixing bleach and lemon juice creates a toxic fume? Why create your own cleaning products when you can use non-toxic cleaners that have been made for you and are safe.

Chemicals have replaced bacteria and viruses as the main threat to health. The diseases we are beginning to see as the major causes of death in the latter part of (the 1900’s) and into the 21st century are diseases of chemical origin.
Dr. Dick Irwin, Toxicologist, Texas A&M University

5. The Great Smell!

I am not sure how much experience you have with non-toxic products, but the ones we use smell SO GOOD! They are not overpowering because fragrances are often toxic but keep our home super fresh. I am obsessed with our room spray, like A LOT. If you want to know more about our specific products feel free to send me a message in the form below or SHOP NOW!

For the one who gives you everything, give them the gift of JORD

Last weekend my husband and I had our wedding anniversary. We have been married seven years! Time sure does fly when you are having fun.

My husband and I are very fortunate to have been given the gift of alone time last weekend. My in-laws generously agreed to babysit so we could take a road trip all alone, just the two of us, no kids. Glorious!

Of course, we love our children and we missed them, but spending time with your partner after children is so important. Giving them the gift of your time is one of the most generous gifts that can be given. There are so many distractions in life after kids. It is so easy to get wrapped up in your little people and forget about one another. I am guilty of this, so is my husband. Becoming cognizant of our time together had been one of the best attributes of our marriage.

On our way to drop the kids off at Grandma and Grandpa’s house I asked my husband if we could stop by our mailbox. Inside, there was a surprise for him! I had ordered him the Conway watch from JORD. This watch is absolutely gorgeous. He was ecstatic when he pulled it from the box. All of the watches from JORD are Wood watches and his first comment was how wonderful the real wood smelled. Next, he was thrilled with the blue face of the watch. This made me especially happy because I know blue is his favorite color and I made sure to find one he would love.

Disclosure: This post is sponsored by JORD. I was given a free watch in exchange for this post. All opinions expressed are my own.

Along with the beauty, the functionality of the watch is amazing. He was so excited he asked me to set the watch so he could show his parents and it was easy to do so. One click out and twist to set the time, pull the top button and he was set! The watch is also equipped with a guide to help you easily set the time.

The Conway also features a 3-dial face with a sapphire glass and luminescent hands. The beautiful wood is also splash resistant, which is great for frequent hand washing.
I could tell my husband was so proud of his new watch. His parents loved it and he received so many compliments over the weekend. He wears it with pride every day. I know he loves to show it off and tells me he’s showered with compliments every day. If you’re searching for a one-of-kind gift for the most important person in your life, consider the gift of JORD.

Even better, enter to win $100.00 toward your purchase! Every person who enters will be given a $25.00 credit toward a watch after the winner has been drawn. Either way, you win! Your partner will be thrilled with this gift. Plus, the holidays are coming! What better gift than a gift to remember all of your wonderful times together. Happy shopping and best of luck!

The Ten Ways Parenthood is Just Like Game of Thrones

1. It all starts as fun and games.

The beginning of GOT starts at a party. There is a great gathering of all friends and family. Everyone is having a great time. Until they’re not…

2. Suddenly, the news is discovered. That fun night has led to an unexpected, maybe expected, but still scary situation. A child is in your future.

3. At this point decisions need to be made.

Traveling to a new state. Taking on a new job. These are all events that may occur upon discovering that a child’s life is now in your hands. Let’s just hope it ends better for you than it did for Ned.

4. The night of the Red Wedding.

Child birth is gross. Also beautiful, but really, really gross. Let’s be honest. Your life is basically over as you’ve known it.

5. Witchcraft amuck.

Soon after the birth of your child you’ll try just about anything to get them to eat, sleep and remain sort of a human being yourself. If the Lord of Light can help, you’ll be sure to summon him.

6. There will be battles.

Lots and lots of battles. If the aforementioned eating and sleeping issues aren’t enough soon you’ll have tantrums, back talk and just the overall mess of children.

7. They’re basically like dragons.

As the mother of dragons knows, parenting is difficult. Just be grateful they can’t fly around shooting flames.

8. Eventually, you discover something worse.

Just as you’re thinking your kids can’t be any worse they start interacting with other kids. These icey ones will probably make you appreciate your dragons just a little more.

9. New bonds will be formed.

Connecting with other parents is essential for your sanity. You’ll find unlikely comrades in the least likely places. Just watch your back, there’s always one mean girl in every group.

10. In the end your parenting will pay off.

We won’t know what happens in GOT for another two years. It’s basically like parenting. It takes years to see all of your hard work pay off, but eventually it does. One day you’re sending your child off to kindergarten. The next thing you know they’re off to college and you’re going to miss those little dragons. Though that day feels an eternity away we all know it will be here in the blink of an eye.

MomPlex: A Mom’s Dream Come True

Last week, I had to set up a meeting for my blog. I will be honest with you, I was mortified. I started this thing so I did not have to meet up with actual people. Can’t we all just talk to each other online?!

Apparently not.

While frantically searching for a meeting locale, I stumbled upon a local business called MomPlex. I had seen their posts previously and it seemed like an amazing place. I just had to check them out for myself. I was not disappointed in my findings.

Being a Mom in Business just became a whole lot easier.

MomPlex is a Mom’s dream. It is a mom owned business and all members are moms. You come to their coffee shop located on Price and Baseline, where Lindsey will greet you with a Mama Macchiato, or coffee of your choice, drop the kids at their on-site daycare and then return to their plush couches or dining table to work. Sounds amazing, right?!

As I mentioned in my post last week about the not so traditional stay-at-home mom there are many moms actually work, but they work from home. Have you tried to work from home with screaming kids? This gives you the option to let someone else watch your kids for a few hours, so you can truly get some work done. Even better, most of the women in the daycare are moms themselves, so they understand the love and attention each child needs and deserves.

MomPlex’s owner Bethany said this idea came from the fact that she is a work from home mom. She says “I started a financial coaching business from home with a 1-year-old and a 3-year-old climbing all over me. I’d spend 30 plus hours a week “working” struggling to get anything done… so (I thought) what if I could have just a few guaranteed “work” hours to myself? Without spending everything I make on childcare? So, now there is MomPlex!

With MomPlex you will find a true community of women and a place to really get your work done. It’s momming done right. #momwin

Dear Mama, You’ve Got This

My Dearest Mama,

I see you over there. You’re walking around as if the weight of the world is on your shoulders. Mentally, it may very well be. Your family is your world and you navigate the ins and outs each and every day. I’m here to remind you, you’ve got this.

With every meal you make, and every tantrum you handle you prove your worth each day. Your children may never remember all your sacrifices for them, but you will.

You’ll remember the pain of childbirth, the scars still left behind. The moment they were put into your arms and your heart burst with love. Reminding you it was worth all the struggles of pregnancy and you would do it all again. Maybe you have multiple times. And, with each birth, your love multiplies.

But, so does the mess, so does the chaos. So do the daily demands of motherhood. It can be so wearing. The never ending early mornings, the sleepless nights of worry. Trying to maintain your own goals, while pushing your children to strive theirs as well. It’s a truly never ending job, but one with the most rewards.

No matter where you are in your motherhood journey, I just want you to know you’ve got this. Amidst all the hardships, you keep showing up. That’s what really matters. Maybe you don’t spend every dime on organic food and didn’t play the game your child requested, but you’ve still got this and you’ll still keep going because you’re one amazing woman and mother. Never forget that.
