Grandma Leacock’s Chocolate Cake

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

1 1/4 c. sugar

1/2 c. butter

2 squares melted chocolate or 6-7 Tbsp. cocoa

2 eggs

1/2 c. milk

2 c. flour

1 tsp. vanilla

1 1/2 tsp. cream of tartar

1 tsp. salt

Mix sugar and shortening until smooth, add chocolate, eggs and milk.  Mix.  Add flour, vanilla, cream of tartar and salt.  Batter will be thick.  Last, boil 3/4 c. of water and add 1 tsp. baking soda to the boiling water, dissolve.  Add to batter slowly while mixer is on its lowest setting.  Pour into greased 9×13 pan and immediately put into the oven.  Bake for 25-30 minutes.
